August Events in the Sutherland Shire & Sydney 2026

August might be the last month of winter, but there's plenty happening across the Shire and Sydney to get us out of the house.
From long lunches and local art to cherry blossoms, theatre and family days out, we've rounded up a few of the events worth putting in the calendar for the rest of August.
August Events Worth Adding to Your Calendar
Saturday 15 August | 12:30pm–4pm | Isora, Cronulla
We're starting close to home with a very special one.
This August, SLAM Society is celebrating four years of bringing women together with Girls Gone Brunch at Isora Cronulla.
Expect an afternoon of incredible food, drinks, music, giveaways, beautiful gift bags packed with goodies from our Community Friends and brand partners, some seriously good door prizes and, most importantly, a room full of women ready to connect, celebrate and have a genuinely good afternoon.
Come with your girlfriends or come solo — plenty of women do. That's exactly what SLAM is about.
There are only a handful of tickets remaining, so if you've been thinking about joining us, this is your sign.
Women in Business Lunch – Cronulla
Thursday 27 August | 1pm - 3pm |Cronulla
A relaxed afternoon bringing local women in business together over lunch for genuine conversation, new connections and collaboration.
No awkward networking — just a welcoming table of women sharing what they do, what they’re working on and who they’d love to meet.
Until Sunday 30 August | Hazelhurst Arts Centre, Gymea
If you're looking for something local and a little slower, make a morning of Hazelhurst.
Sydney-born artist Milli Jannides' solo exhibition The Tip of the Tongue is showing until 30 August, featuring a collection of new paintings. Hazelhurst is also hosting a special artist-led Gesture Tour of the exhibition on Sunday 16 August from 11am–12pm.
Add coffee or lunch at Hazel Kitchen & Bar afterwards and you've got an easy Shire day out.

Thursday 27 August | 9am–12pm | Lucas Heights
One for anyone who loves discovering parts of the Shire they don't normally get to see.
Sutherland Shire Bushcare is running a guided walk through the seldom-visited Lucas Heights
Conservation Area. It's free, but registration is required.
A good excuse to get outdoors before winter officially disappears.
Heading into Sydney?
Until Sunday 16 August | Art Gallery of NSW
If you haven't made it to this year's Archibald yet, you're running out of time.
The 2026 Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prize exhibition wraps up on 16 August, so this weekend is your last chance to see this year's finalists together at the Art Gallery of NSW.
Perfect for a Sunday in the city followed by lunch or drinks nearby.
15–23 August | Various Sydney locations
National Science Week kicks off on 15 August, with events happening across Sydney for kids, families and adults.
On Saturday 22 August, Sydney events include Science at the Museum at the Chau Chak Wing Museum, the Indigenous Science Experience in Redfern, family maker activities at Darling Square Library and the Sydney City Farm open day.
Definitely one to bookmark if you're looking for something different to do with the kids.
22–30 August | Auburn Botanic Gardens
One of Sydney's prettiest winter events is back.
For nine days, Auburn Botanic Gardens will be filled with cherry blossoms alongside Japanese food, culture and entertainment for the annual Sydney Cherry Blossom Festival.
It's open daily from 9am–4:45pm, and tickets are required.
If your camera roll needs a little colour after winter, this might be the one.
Now playing | Capitol Theatre, Sydney
For a family day out — or an excuse to revisit a childhood favourite — Disney's The Lion King is currently playing at Sydney's Capitol Theatre for a strictly limited season.
Between the music, costumes, puppetry and sheer scale of the production, it's one of those shows that works just as well for the adults as it does for the kids.
Until 13 September | Sydney Opera House
And if you're organising a girls' night in the city, this one sounds like fun.
Velvet Inferno is taking over the Studio at the Sydney Opera House with a high-energy mix of disco, vocals and circus performances.
Make a night of it with dinner and cocktails around Circular Quay beforehand.
So, what are we doing this August?
Whether it's a local morning at Hazelhurst, a day in the city, something with the kids or getting dressed up and joining us around the table at Girls Gone Brunch, there's still plenty of August left to enjoy.
And if there's one thing we've learnt through SLAM, it's that sometimes you just have to put something in the diary and go.
